Actiontec - Q1000 (Qwest Firmware) Port Forwarding Guide For automatic port forwarding try Step 1. Some routers & modems work best with port forwarding if you have a static local IP. Manually set your network interface card ( NIC ) to use a static ip address. You can also download my FREE tool to set it for you. Open your favorite web browser and input your routers ip address in the address bar. Please note that you must have the in order to connect to your router/modem properly.

Need help finding you router IP address? Some router/modems require a username and/or password, if yours requires it, enter the routers username and password here. If you don't know it you can check our list of default router and modem password list. If you have changed it and don't remember it you may have to reset your device to factory default using the reset button on most routers. Once logged into your router click on the 'Advanced Setup' tab.

Next click on 'Security' Now click on 'Advanced Port Forwarding' Step 5. For 'Starting Port' enter the starting port to be forwarded. Example: 2100 Now in 'Ending Port' enter the ending port to be forwarded. Example: 3100 Next choose the 'Protocol' you want to use. For the 'LAN IP Address' field put the local IP of the computer.

Click 'Apply' Repeat step 5 for any more ports you need to forward.

Ok, this is kind of advancedso email me if you have any issues/questions. First, the reason I started poking around in my router/gateway is because I recently bought a new laptop and when I plugged it in, no IP address. Opened an elevated command prompt, ran ipconfig -release && ipconfig -renew. Cleared my ARP cache, checked routing tables, the whole ninenothing. I checked to make sure I could ping the Gateway, good there, logged into the gateway and verified everything was working (plenty of DHCP leases available, good connectivity to ISP, etc.) I even rebooted the modem (something I hate to do) no diceNothing worked, I assumed it was a bad NIC or wireless card.

Pinging loopback worked but I wasn’t convinced so I ran a hardware diagnostic, everything came back peachy. As a last ditch effort I reset my modem/router/gateway to factory default and VOILA! Everything worked (just had to go back and reconfigure all of my security settings).

When I had more free time I revisited why would a factory restore fix it? Did some googling and found out that the ISP remotely updated my firmware and had been doing so for years without my knowledge (not a big deal really). Well some Google research led me to another blog where a great deal of people were having issues (memory leak) with the firmware version I had.

So naturally I wanted to roll it back to a previous version Now the steps:. Download the firmware version you want to install. Here’s the one I’m using. Unplug all but one PC or laptop from your modem. You should only have the power cable and a CAT-5 cable (wireless won’t work) plugged in at this point.

Find a pencil or pen and hold down the reset button on the back or bottom of the modem until the power light stays red. 30 seconds). Ok, it’s now in a state where it can accept a different firmware version without getting that pesky “there’s a newer version” message. But waitI can’t connect to the modem any more? Don’t panic, here’s what you do: 6. You need to manually configure a static IP address and set your modem’s IP as your gateway. The method varies on which OS you have so check with Google or contact me or another computer guy.

But Technacious, how do I know what my gateway is? Well, for me it changed from 192.168.0.1 to 192.168. 1.1 but yours may be different based on make and model.

Ok, now open a web browser and type in your gateway IP. Follow the instructions given on the page and point to the firmware you downloaded in step 1.

Let it finish, don’t touch ANYTHING until it’s done. If the update process gets interrupted somehow you may have permanently broken it but start over and try again. Now the Million dollar question isWhat’s to stop my ISP from updating my firmware and having to do this over and over and over? Glad you asked.

On my Actiontec Q1000 there is a hidden menu. 192.168.0.1/ main.html Go here, and browse through the settings for something along the lines of TR-069. Explanation: TR-069 is a WAN management Protocol that allows an ACS (Auto-Configuration Server) to perform auto-configuration, provision, collection and diagnostics. We’ll have none of that auto-configuration thank you very much DISABLE. I am happy to report that my modem has been running problem free and faster than ever since I downgraded my firmware and turned off TR-069.
