His very presence unsettles Lou and how does Gabe appear to be in two places at the same time? As Christmas draws closer, Lou starts to understand the value of time.

He sees what is truly important in life yet at the same time he learns the harshest lesson of all. This is a story about people who not unlike parcels, hide secrets.They cover themselves in layers until the right person unwraps them and discovers what’s inside. Sometimes you have to be unravelled in order to find out who you really are. For Lou Suffern, that took time.

Cecelia Ahern is a very clever, creative writer. I really admire her work. It's pretty awesome. When you look at her covers, you don't expect much (At least that's how it was with me).

You expect just another romantic comedy with all the gooey, cheesy, lovey-dovey romantic parts. Trust me, that is FAR from the case. Her books are wonderful. They deal with serious issues and serious problems.

And most importantly they are not stupidly and hopelessly romantic in any way.Insert cheers and applause here. About this novel. The ending was very sad.

It's a moralistic kind of novel, and I liked that about it. I especially loved the final paragraph.

I didn't really hate Lou, like I thought I would when I heard about the book and all. I actually pitied him. He lost track of his life and was living for nothing.

He didn't experience true joy or happiness and lived for his work. He hurt himself and the people around him on a daily basis. It was really unfortunate. But, he got a second chance.

He got 'the gift of time'. He got a chance to make things right before he was gone for good. And I think everyone would want that. But, unfortunately we can't really have that most of the time. And the point of this book, I think, is to rattle us and make us aware of that. That time is slipping away, and that we won't get a second chance to make it right, we won't get extra time. We need to make things right.

We need to be happy and live for a reason and not just watch our lives waste away. No matter how young or old. I don't have much to say except that Cecelia is a very clever writer.

The Gift centres on the story of Lou Suffern, as told through the eyes of someone else. Lou is your stereotypical over-working business man; he constantly needs to be in two places at once, strives to always be bigger and better, and relieves himself with his womanising ways. As a result, his family take a backseat and suffer, all the while standing by him waiting for things to change. And things may just change once Lou meets Gabe, the mysterious homeless man who sits outside his office building “One thing of great importance can affect a small number of people.

Equally so, a thing of little importance can affect a multitude. Either way, a happening big or small can affect an entire string of people.” Ahern is a wonderfully gifted writer with a writing style that is easy and enjoyable to follow through her magical tales. I found myself submerged in her story telling straight from the opening chapter. During the beginning of the book, she describes the warmth and calmness of Christmas with beautiful imagery, and manages to get you to feel that warmth inside as you read along.

Although this book is set at Christmas time, it’s not exactly Christmas themed, though that didn’t stop me feeling the Christmas spirit as I read the first three paragraphs. The interesting thing about this book is that the protagonist is not necessarily likeable and can be difficult to empathize with, yet we, as a reader, find ourselves willing him to succeed in improving himself. Personally, I continued to dislike Lou throughout the full book, and yet I found myself completely invested in him, and found I was rooting for him for his family’s sake rather than his.

“A lesson finds the common denominator and links us all together, like a chain. At the end of that chain dangles a clock, and on the face of the clock registers the passing of time. We see it and we hear it, the hushed tick-tock, but often we don’t feel it. Each second makes its mark on every single person’s life comes and then goes, quietly disappearing without fanfare, evaporating into air like steam from a piping hot Christmas pudding. Enough time leaves us warm; when our time is gone, it leaves us cold.”This is a magical tale, a wonderful Christmas read, and although far-fetched, it definitely gets the intended message across - there is nothing more valuable than time.

Time can’t be borrowed and returned, you can’t buy it back. Once your time is spent, there’s no grabbing it back, and for that reason, we need to value it more than anything. The issues addressed in the book are real life issues, and all of the characters were so realistic and believable. It was enough to bring a tear to my eye in closing chapter.

I've also known that family is the most important thing in our lives and true happiness is hidden among family holidays, school performances of your children and simple routine days which you spend with your nearest and dearest. But still this book maybe useful for those who put job before family, even if it is for your family's sake and happy future. The end of the story shocked me, as for me, it was too cruel and even difficult to read, especially the part when Lou came home after the accident and had a few hours with his family.

Life is wonderful because we don't know the date of our death, but for Lou Suffern it must have been the most difficult few hours, although, the happiest ones. All in all, I believe that this book can show some people real values of life and teach us not to waste precious time. 's is a lovely addition to holiday fiction. It leaves readers with a beautiful message about how precious and impactful the gift of time is. Not just time on this earth, but the time you purposefully set aside for those who give your life quality and purpose. Nurture those relationships before you lose them.

Her books are so easy to read and leave you feeling really uplifted and The Gift definitely does that. I was a little dubious about reading a Christmas novel in July but towards the end I really got into the festive spirit! I am very busy during the day but once I started reading I couldn't put it down.I was putting off chores to read 'just one more chapter'! It keeps you engrossed from the onset, just wanting to know what was going to happen next. It may be a bit far-fetched but when you have finished the book you do really see things in life a bit differently because we are all guilty of 'being too busy'! I highly recommend this book! I wanted something easy to read on public transport and this certainly ticked that box. I finished it before even adding it to my 'currently reading' on this site!

I suppose it's easy to be cynical about the character of Gabe in his mysterious guardian angel role, and I understand the whole point of this story is to emulate a type of Scrooge story in the city; a man who goes through an experience that forces him to see the world differently and prompts him to want to turn over a new-leaf. You have to introduce an element of magic and suspend disbelief to achieve that, that's fine. It's even set at Christmas time! It only narrowly avoids the cheesiness of a Hollywood Christmas movie by its ending, but by that point, I actually wanted to see the new leaf pan out and the characters to live happily ever after. I felt Gabe was under developed and could have thrown in a couple of jokes just to make him more likable. The concept that the whole story is being narrated between some barely connected characters based in a police station was distracting and did not work, to my mind. This book left a bad taste in my mouth mostly because of the tone of the author.

She patronisingly lectures about the lessons we ought to have learned on this insightful journey she has been so good to lead us through (!). I don't believe the message that time is precious and you should appreciate your loved ones was something most people needed to be told by an over privileged chick lit author. I've neither read or watched PS. I Love You so I have no prior expectations except that I assumed since it had been so phenomenally successful, the writing of the author must be good. Unfortunately I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would, but perhaps if I'm basing my judgement on my perception of the success of another book, I ought to have read that one instead.

Ξενύχτια, συσκέψεις, ραντεβού (τόσο επαγγελματικά όσο και προσωπικά), γρήγορα αυτοκίνητα, ονειρεμένο σπίτι, μια γυναίκα, 2 παιδιά και μια οικογένεια οι οποίοι, βλέπουμε, ότι είναι στην τελευταία θέση στην ζωή του. Αλαζόνας, εγωκεντρικός, επίμονος, εγωιστής και γενικά άνθρωπος που δεν εκτιμάει ούτε σέβεται τίποτα και κανέναν πέρα από την δουλειά του. Διαβάζοντας αυτό τον απαίσιο χαρακτήρα απόρησα το ότι είχε και οικογένεια. Πως ένα τέτοιο άτομο κατάφερε και ερωτεύτηκε, παντρεύτηκε και έκανε δύο παιδιά.

Η κατάσταση στο σπίτι του είναι τόσο τεταμένη που ούτε ο 1μιση χρονών γιος του δεν φαίνεται να τον αναγνωρίζει. Μέχρι που ένα πρωί γνωρίζει τον Γκέιμπ. Και σαν από θαύμα η ζωή του αρχίζει και παίρνει διαφορετική ρότα. Οι τελευταίες σελίδες διαβάστηκαν ανάμεσα με αναφιλητά και χαρτομάντηλα.

The Gift really makes you take a look at your priorities and think about what's really important. Making something of yourself at the cost of everyone around you or trying to be there and cherish the people you love. Miss Ahern wrote about today's everyday person living in a modern world where careers are so very important and spun it into a magical story that I had no idea that it was headed in the direction it did. I'm so glad I gave this author another try.

The story could be compared to a modern fairytale, and I believe almost everyone would be able to identify themselves with Lou, the main character. Even though the story seems very far fetched, it is something we have come to like about Cecelia's books.

The story will make you reflect on your life - Lou’s life could be my life or your life. It reminds all of us the we have to re-focus on the important things in life again, like family, and not let it slip away - we only have one and should do the most with it! The book is written in a style you've come to expect from Cecelia: easy, with parts that make you laugh, cry but also makes you think.

The Gift follows the story or should I say stories of a very 'busy' man named Lou Suffern, Gabe, Raphie & The Turkey Boy in the most unexpected time of the year. I love how the story intertwines with another story in this book, it's like a story within a story. The way the author wrote this novel just blew me away, I mean the whole plot of the story is not new to me I read a couple of books that has the same thing going on but the way she wrote this made a very huge difference from the other stories that I have read.

The author didn't have to try hard to make her novel realistic because it just is. There were times that I thought some events in this book was very unrealistic but she handled it very well, you would understand why she did that. The plot twist made me cry and realize a lot of things. I didn't expect that to happen, it is indeed one heck of a roller coaster ride of feels! This book just made me realize a lot of things, it has shown me the true value of time, family and all the things that surrounds you.

We have to give importance to those that is a part of our lives, we shouldn't take them for granted.You have to give yourself to someone in order for you to know who you really are, as a gift perhaps. Sometimes you have to unravel things to get to the core. I really really really enjoyed this book! It was definitely perfect for the holiday season, you can feel the Christmas vibe in this book! I hope you can give this book a try! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ALL OF YOU TO READ AT LEAST ONE OF CECELIA AHERN'S NOVELS.

The imparting of life's wisdom upon the turkey chucker? The sickening feeling that we have read this story and it was much better when Mr.

Charles Dickens wrote it? Check and double check. A side note to the wife in this story: If your husband has an affair with the nanny, leave him before he has time for an angel to visit him cause he really isn't a nice person. Pre-listen guess: I think this is going to be hard to take. I am not that big on Christmas stories but apparently this is one. It feels out of season since it is August, but hey maybe it will be something to listen to in December.

On the back of this book it says 'An instant holiday classic' so you think you'll be in for a nice and cozy type of read. I mean I would say 95% of the book is great but as soon as you realize how it's going to end you're like 'WTF?' I stayed up late finishing it b/c I kept thinking there is no way it's going to end like I think it is but it did. And this time? Well, it kinda does. Let me get this straight: this book has meaning to it, no doubt. Cecelia Ahern brilliantly wrote a novel that teaches us the value of the greatest gift of all: time, and how we should use time to make the most of our lives. This lesson wasn’t brought to us in a patronising way, but through beautifully written passages and the Christmas setting. At the heart of the story is Lou - a man who was a complete jerk to his wife, his children, and his family. He was drowning in the sea of work without even thinking back why he had to do so much work all the time during his day.

He was the typical man of the modern world who didn’t know the work/life balance, and that the most precious thing you should try to keep is your family, not your work. And not to mention during this derail into the madness of overworking, he also became an unfaithful man who cheated on his wife time after time with multiple extramarital affairs. In short, Lou was a character that you can easily hate and pity at the same time. Because of that, Lou’s journey to realize what he should have valued all along, how many wrongdoings he had done, how much pain he had caused to his family and others around him, was a beautiful, heartbreaking and served as a wakeup call not only for Lou, but for all of us.

Then came the shocking ending. For this type of story, which took place at Christmas, I fervently hoped for a happy ending in which the main character, after his realization, will have a chance to repair his relationships with people in his life and truly becomes a better man. Just not this time, and not with Lou. At first, the ending was like a slap to my face; I felt like I was cheated, I was lied to, like I was put in this beautiful journey with Lou for nothing.

My reaction was like, OMG, Cecelia Ahern, why did you ruin such a great story with an ending like this????? But then, as I read the ending again, I suddenly realized why she did what she did, why she let that tragedy happen. The moment Lou spent with his children, the feeling of his daughter and his son, growing up without him by their side, all the years and months of their future lives in which Lou couldn’t be a part of.

That hit me kinda hard. And this tragedy that happened at the end of the novel only serves to remind the readers once again, that we can never take time for granted. We can never take our family, our spouse, our children, our parents for granted. And must always know that they are the most precious people in our lives, the ones that we should spend the most time with. Although I enjoyed this book that much, there is still one question lingering in my mind: is the book that great to deserve greater rating than the original 2 stars.

The answer is yes, but how much greater? I’m not sure if I would still remember this book and all the details in it many months or years from now. The first time the book didn’t stay with me, then what can guarantee it will this time?

This type of story, to me, isn’t the one that requires you to reread many times and figure out some new things after each read, because its meaning is obvious. And for me, someone who truly values work/life balance and the importance of time for family, this book seems rather redundant and not a work of literature that is so exceptional that it must be remembered. So yeah, I gave it 3 stars this time just for the great content. I’ll see if the book has left long lasting impression in me and give it one more star if it deserves it. P.S.: I’ve heard this book was opted for a movie version back in 2015.

I've read one book by her before this- If You Could See Me Now and I liked it a lot, but it was some time back and I didn't happen upon one of her books again until this.

So I had quite forgotten the name of the author and so I started The Gift with no expectations whatsoever, preparing myself to see what this 'new' author would give me- I know, I'm cringing here too, like, how could I forget an author I'd read and loved before?!! Anyway, I was about 10% into the book when I realized I had read a book by the author before (well, I was more like, OMG OMG OMG HOW COULD I FORGET, THIS IS CECELIA AHERN!!!!!!!!). I don't make much sense here, do I?

What I meant to tell you is that Cecelia Ahern has quite a lovely, unique way of writing that somehow pulls you into the book. She takes a serious, and maybe complicated, subject and weaves it into a magical story that you can't help but fall in love with. She did it with If You Could See Me Now, and she did it again with The Gift- and I'm sure her other books are just as good or even better and can't wait to check some of them out some time soon! On to the review now- The Gift revolves around Lou Suffern, a typical workaholic who, as workaholics often do, neglects his family as he focuses climbing up, up and up the ladder of success at work. And just like most cases, he caves in to womanizing tendencies to relieve himself, while his wife, kids, parents and siblings wait patiently for their husband, father, son and brother to realize the folly of his ways and return back to them.

Things start changing for Lou when he meets Gabe, the mysterious, kind of creepy, homeless man who sits outside his office building. It goes without saying that I loved the author's writing style. I found myself lost in the story right from page one. Even though this book is set during Christmas, it's not particularly Christmas themed, but still the author manages to make us feel the spirit of Christmas as she describes the warmth of the seasonal atmosphere and manages to make the reader feel it too as she spins this magical tale. What's really amazing about this book is that the protagonist is a bit of a jerk and is quite unlikable, but by the end of the book, you'd find yourself rooting for him- even if that's more for the sake of his family than for him.

I completely loved the ending, even though it did manage to make me squeeze out a tear or two and couldn't help but wish things had turned out differently for Lou Suffern. “A lesson finds the common denominator and links us all together, like a chain. At the end of that chain dangles a clock, and on the face of the clock registers the passing of time. We see it and we hear it, the hushed tick-tock, but often we don’t feel it. Each second makes its mark on every single person’s life comes and then goes, quietly disappearing without fanfare, evaporating into air like steam from a piping hot Christmas pudding. Enough time leaves us warm; when our time is gone, it leaves us cold.” If you are on the lookout for a touching Christmas read this year, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this book to you.

However, near the end, she does come across as though she is giving a lecture and the fact that she is clearly telling the reader what to do and appreciate just doesn't come across well - unfortunately, I found the last, ending paragraph to sound a bit pretentious - not a good way to end a story. I do appreciate the lesson that is given which is to spend time with your loved ones and to let them know that you care about them. Though I don't think it's something that really needs to be pointed out, it gives a nice seasonal message to the story.

I found the strong points of the novel to be in the working out of relationships between Lou and his family as they felt very realistic. The dynamics between Lou and his wife and children were especially well explored. I didn't feel as though Ahern had a very clear direction for this story and her characters weren't very solid. The story is told in the form of a policeman (Raphie) telling a teenage boy (known as Turkey Boy) the story of a case that he worked on. For me, the story of 'Turkey Boy' and conversation between him and Raphie in a few short chapters were more intriguing and felt better developed than the main story of Lou. I couldn't bring myself to like Lou at all - there was simply no part of his persona that appealed to me.

Gabe, the character brought into the novel in order to give a message, had a huge amount of potential to be interesting, but he seemed to flit in and out of chapters without any development. Both Lou and Gabe had an uncertainty to them, as though Ahern herself didn't really have a firm idea of them herself. As for the magical realism in this book, I totally was not expecting it and it completely threw me off. For some people, this may be a nice surprise, but it wasn't for me. I enjoy magical books, but the 'magical cloning pills' that were thrown into this just felt completely random and made the whole thing feel a little disjointed.

I know that they were an important component to the storyline, but it almost completely ruined this book for me. The climax of the book comes around near the end and I can see it being a twist that will either work for you or that you'll really, really resent. Thankfully, for me it worked. Despite reminding me of the ending of One Day by Nicholls (which I didn't enjoy), I found this to be effective in bringing closure to the tale and the message. This book was not something that I'd particularly recommend, as I didn't enjoy it all that much.

It had a playful side too, as it enjoyed the crowd, tossed the children about, knocked lilos over, tipped over windsurfers, occasionally gave sailors helping hands; all done with a secret little chuckle” —.
